Ghosts John C. Mannone

A guardian angel could be an alter ego’s ghost —perhaps a shadow from a higher dimension where angels reside alongside demonic haunts and haints. How many times have you experienced déjà vu and dismissed it as an illusion, a trick of the mind or the subconscious? And what about those premonitions? Applying rationale is self-limiting. While good science operates on concrete realities, it always allows for abstract concepts. Could a ghost be written as a quantum mechanical wave function?
Logic allows for the transcendence of the familiar; ask any gifted mathematician about that, or even a Catholic priest. So, ghosts could be metaphysical. Ghostbusters think they can detect them through heightened electromagnetic activity. If that were true, it would be easy to constantly monitor a tunable antenna and map them. But remember, conservation laws must be obeyed, like the conservation of energy; we can’t just have ghost energy pop up out of nowhere. On the other hand, if they did arrive from another mysterious realm, like a parallel universe, it could be argued that they’d create electromagnetic distortions. However,
these would likely be undetectably weak. Experimental physics wouldn’t be able to imagine a scenario for their detection without violating its own core principles.

Are you hoping
for a violation of physics, really! Whom will you believe?
Go ahead, try out your electromagnetic voice recorder.

Hear a ghostly voice in the electrically recorded hiss?
I didn’t think so. Who you gonna call? Ghostbusters?

Don’t think. Just call the lackluster ghost directly,
as in a prayer. It’ll transcend physics all the way,

even ascending to the metaphysical heaven, perhaps.
Perhaps you should inquire in the other direction.

Perhaps they’ll manifest as an otherworldly choir,
as poltergeists in pareidolia, dancing in the fire,

prancing around the pyre in geistly pairs
until you’re exhausted from the futile ghastly search.

You’ve exhausted all possibilities for a ghostly perch.
Who will you really believe? The inviolate physics,
      I hope
